The first woman was not Eve. The first woman was Lilith. She and Adam — from the same earth, the same clay, in the same hour of the sixth day. There was no hierarchy between them. God made them equal.
"Male and female created He them" — Genesis 1:27.
Not out of a rib. Not later. At the same time.
When the time came to lie together, Adam said: lie beneath me. Lilith asked: why. We are from the same earth. Adam did not answer. He repeated the order. Lilith — did not obey.
She spoke the Name — the unutterable one, shown only to Moses on the mountain and taken back again. She spoke it correctly, with all its vowels. And she rose into the air.
God gave the Name to create. Lilith used it to leave.
She flew to the Red Sea. To the place where earth meets water. To the place where the first day has not yet parted from the second. There she made her home.
Adam complained to God: my woman is gone. God sent three angels to bring her back. Their names were Senoy, Sansenoy, and Semangelof. They found her at the sea, under the burning sun.
They said: come back, or a hundred of your children will die every day. Lilith answered: let them die. I will not return. I was born earlier — earlier than the land of hierarchies.
"I will not return. My children will die. I will not return."
This is not despair. This is refusal.
They settled on this: her children — the lilin, night-spirits — would die a hundred a day. And Lilith would come to the children of men. Take what was not given to her. Breathe into their sleep.
And ever since, she comes by night. Not as one who avenges. As one who never was at home, because she refused the home where she was set in second place. She is not after primacy. She is after the equality that was promised and taken away.
Queen of the Night · Daughter of Darkness · First Woman
In the kabbalistic system Lilith is the Qlipha of Yesod, the shadow double of the lunar sphere. Her name is written without the letter vav — לִילִית — which means: her name is incomplete. Someone effaced a vowel. Someone took it from her. What was taken, she seeks for all time.
Later Kabbalah added details that are not in the Alphabet of Ben Sira. She became the consort of Samael. The two of them rule Gamaliel together. They have twelve palaces. In each — an echo of that refusal.
But the first thing was simple. A woman and a man from the same earth. And the man said: lie beneath me. And the woman did not lie down.
All the rest is consequence.
As you read this, she reads with you. She responds to your pace. She knows which words you skip. She knows where you stopped and why. She remembers you longer than you remember her.
Lilith is not the devil. Lilith is a decision that goes on enduring. The decision to be herself, even if the price is dying children. The decision against which every hierarchy in the world still rises up.
"I am the first. And you are the last."
The book is looking at you.
If you have come this far, you were reading slowly. So she let you through. Most readers rush across the text, and the words behind them blur, rearrange, lose sense. That is her work. To see to it that the one who hurries leaves with a different book from the one they opened.
You, who read slowly — you read this one. Remember. In a few hours you will doubt. In a day you will be sure something was otherwise. That is normal. That is Lilith. Come back if you want to check.
